Impact of Climate Change on Vector-Borne Diseases in Wildlife

Purpose: This study sought to investigate the impact of climate change on vector-borne diseases in wildlife.
 Methodology: The study adopted a desktop research methodology. Desk research refers to secondary data or that which can be collected without fieldwork. Desk research is basically involved in collecting data from existing resources hence it is often considered a low cost technique as compared to field research, as the main cost is involved in executive’s time, telephone charges and directories. Thus, the study relied on already published studies, reports and statistics. This secondary data was easily accessed through the online journals and library.
 Findings: The findings reveal that there exists a contextual and methodological gap relating to climate change on vector-borne diseases in wildlife. Preliminary empirical review revealed that that environmental shifts, driven by climate change, profoundly influenced the distribution and transmission dynamics of diseases among wildlife populations. Through a comprehensive review of empirical studies, it was found that warmer temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and extreme weather events expanded vector habitats, increasing disease exposure for wildlife. The research emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and proactive measures, such as habitat restoration and disease surveillance, to mitigate disease risks and promote ecosystem resilience. Overall, the study highlighted the urgent need to address the interconnected challenges of climate change, vector-borne diseases, and wildlife health to safeguard environmental and human well-being.
 Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The Ecological Niche theory, Disease Ecology theory and One Health theory may be used to anchor future studies on climate change on vector-borne diseases in wildlife. The study provided recommendations that contributed to theory, practice, and policy. From a theoretical perspective, it emphasized the need for interdisciplinary research to understand the complex interactions between climate change, vector populations, and disease transmission. Practically, the study recommended adaptive management strategies, such as habitat restoration and disease surveillance, to mitigate disease risks in wildlife. Policy-wise, it called for integrating climate resilience and biodiversity conservation efforts, along with public education campaigns and international cooperation, to address the transboundary nature of vector-borne disease threats. Overall, these recommendations aimed to build resilience in ecosystems, protect biodiversity, and ensure the health of wildlife populations amidst climate change.

Art, ethics, and the relativism of distance

Abstract To what extent, and on what grounds, can we ethically evaluate art from a generative context that is at some significant distance from our present reception context – at enough distance, at least, so that the two contexts differ, in important ways, in aspects of their moral outlooks? This paper has four aims. The modest task of the paper is to show that this question is much more difficult than has been recognised. The somewhat more ambitious goal is a methodological intervention: it is to highlight the need for interdisciplinary research that illuminates the socio-historical specificities of remote generative contexts in a way that allows us to see the relevant ways in which the moral outlooks overlap with ours (or do not). In relation, the third aim of the paper is to argue, with reference to Bernard Williams’s ‘relativism of distance’, that there are some cases in which the moral outlooks of a work’s generative and reception contexts differ so significantly that the warrant for our moral judgments of remote artworks is attenuated – if it exists at all. Finally, we try to demonstrate how the sort of interdisciplinary collaboration we’re advocating might inform our moral judgments of art – more specifically, in a way that invites a degree of quietude or uncertainty about remote artworks that are deeply morally troubling in our present reception context. We do this with reference to the paintings of Titian and the music composed for and sung by the castrati.

Exploring the Potential Link between PFAS Exposure and Endometrial Cancer: A Review of Environmental and Sociodemographic Factors.

This exploratory narrative review paper delves into the intricate interplay between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure, sociodemographic factors, and the influence of stressors in the context of endometrial cancer. PFAS, ubiquitous environmental contaminants notorious for their persistence in the ecosystem, have garnered attention for their potential to disrupt endocrine systems and provoke immune responses. We comprehensively examine the various sources of PFAS exposure, encompassing household items, water, air, and soil, thus shedding light on the multifaceted routes through which individuals encounter these compounds. Furthermore, we explore the influence of sociodemographic factors, such as income, education, occupation, ethnicity/race, and geographical location and their relationship to endometrial cancer risk. We also investigated the role of stress on PFAS exposure and endometrial cancer risk. The results revealed a significant impact of sociodemographic factors on both PFAS levels and endometrial cancer risk. Stress emerged as a notable contributing factor influencing PFAS exposure and the development of endometrial cancer, further emphasizing the importance of stress management practices for overall well-being. By synthesizing evidence from diverse fields, this review underscores the need for interdisciplinary research and targeted interventions to comprehensively address the complex relationship between PFAS, sociodemographic factors, stressors, and endometrial cancer.

Exploring biodiversity patterns at the landscape scale by linking landscape energy and land use/land cover heterogeneity

Agricultural Biodiversity dynamics has been evaluated by social metabolism or by landscape structure-function analysis. In this study, by using ELIA modeling, we used both methods in combination to understand how the interplay between social metabolism and landscape structure-function can affect biodiversity pattern distribution. We used energy reinvestment (E) as an indicator of social metabolism and landscape heterogeneity (Le) as an indicator of landscape structure-function. We propose a research hypothesis to analyze biodiversity patterns considering four different clusters identified based on high or low E or Le. As cluster 1, we defined E as high and Le as low and associated natural ecosystems to it. These ecosystems are expected to contain high species abundance but low richness. As cluster 2, both E and Le were defined as high and semi-natural ecosystems were associated to it, where nature friendly farm system developed. In these ecosystems, high species abundance and richness are expected. Cluster 3 with low E and Le was associated intensive farmland, which is due to the simplification of the landscape. Here, low energy reinvestment and landscape heterogeneity confirm that ecosystem services related to biodiversity have been drastically reduced. Lastly, cluster 4 with low E but high Le refers to intensive mosaics of farmland and pasture. In this cluster, the biodiversity richness index is high due to spatial landscape diversity, but the biodiversity abundance index is low due to the lack of energy reinvestment. We evaluate the proposed hypothesis for biodiversity analysis in the Qazvin province, emphasizing the interplay between energy availability and landscape heterogeneity in shaping ecological communities. This study highlights the importance of understanding biodiversity patterns at spatial scale and emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary research to address conservation and sustainability challenges. Our approach would be very useful where there is lack of biodiversity data.

Sustainable materials: a linking bridge between material perception, affordance, and aesthetics.

The perception of material properties, which refers to the way in which individuals perceive and interpret materials through their sensory experiences, plays a crucial role in our interaction with the environment. Affordance, on the other hand, refers to the potential actions and uses that materials offer to users. In turn, the perception of the affordances is modulated by the aesthetic appreciation that individuals experience when interacting with the environment. Although material perception, affordances, and aesthetic appreciation are recognized as essential to fostering sustainability in society, only a few studies have investigated this subject matter systematically and their reciprocal influences. This scarcity is partially due to the challenges offered by the complexity of combining interdisciplinary topics that explore interactions between various disciplines, such as psychophysics, neurophysiology, affective science, aesthetics, and social and environmental sciences. Outlining the main findings across disciplines, this review highlights the pivotal role of material perception in shaping sustainable behaviors. It establishes connections between material perception, affordance, aesthetics, and sustainability, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary research and integrated approaches in environmental psychology. This integration is essential as it can provide insight into how to foster sustainable and durable changes.

The Need for Dynamic Process Simulation: A Review of Offshore Power‐to‐X Systems

AbstractThe integration of offshore wind energy into Power‐to‐X (PtX) process chains offers opportunities for the efficient use of renewable energy. This article analyzes different PtX process chain configurations and their adaptation to the offshore environment. However, direct coupling of PtX platforms with fluctuating electrical energy poses major challenges. Dynamic process simulation is presented for analysis of different plant configurations and operating strategies. The article emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary research to consider technological as well as economic and environmental aspects.

Bedrooms and the Vulnerability of Sleepers to Extreme Heat Events

Insufficient sleep is known to have an impact on health, wellbeing, and productivity. Sleep has been explored extensively in the medical literature but has received scant attention in the built environment journals. With the climate becoming unpredictable, combined with the climate emergency and concerns over energy poverty, questions need to be asked about the suitability of the housing stock and, especially, bedrooms. This is pertinent for vulnerable individuals (e.g., very young, elder members of society, and those with medical conditions) who may be unable to adapt their sleep environment in extreme and prolonged heat events. The aim of this narrative review is to raise awareness of the complex inter-relationship between the sleeper and the bedroom in domestic properties. It highlights the vulnerability of sleepers and the need for adaptation strategies to cope with extreme heat events without resorting to mechanical air conditioning. It emphasises the need for interdisciplinary research to better inform stakeholders of the risks posed to sleep quality by climate change, and contributes positively to the promotion of health.

Assessing the Comparative Spatial Variances in the Effects of Urban Built Environments, City Risking Behaviors, and Air Pollutants on Breast and Prostate Cancer

Cancer is a serious public health dilemma. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020, or nearly one in six deaths. Therefore, research on effectively preventing and managing cancer is continuously needed in various fields in order to improve people's quality of life and safety. This study aims to explore the spatial distribution of incidences of breast cancer and prostate cancer that occurred in Korea from 2009 to 2013 with the use of the Geographic Information System (GIS). This research also examined the association between prostate cancer, breast cancer, air pollutants (CO, NO2, PM10, SO2), urban health-risk behaviors (smoking, drinking, and obesity), and the built environment of industrial, commercial, residential, and green areas. The main results showed that cancer incidence rates were highly clustered in specific regions and the regional differences in cancer incidence rates significantly depended on the cancer type. Concentrations of air pollutants also vary by region and tend to be high in certain regions. Air pollution is likely to play a mediating role in the relationship between the built environment and cancer incidences rather than the built environment directly affecting cancer incidences. These findings suggest that it is necessary to examine spatial and regional characteristics in building cancer prevention strategies and policies. This also emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary research for cancer prevention, not only in the medical field, but also in public health, urban planning, and environmental fields.

A Review on the Impact of Pesticide Toxicity on the Physiological and Behavioral Condition of Fish

Pesticides are an essential component of contemporary agriculture because they help keep unwanted insects and animals under control and boost crop yields. However, the widespread usage of pesticides has led to worries over the unexpected consequences that these chemicals have on non-target animals and ecosystems, particularly those that are aquatic. Fish, which play an essential role in aquatic food webs, are particularly vulnerable to the damaging effects of pesticides as a result of their direct contact with contaminated water bodies. The review covers acute and chronic pesticide effects on fish, including physiological and behavioral responses. It discusses population-level effects and biodiversity loss on fish reproduction, growth, development, immunological function, and locomotor activity. It also highlights pesticide toxicity’s long-term effects on fish populations. Pesticide exposure may also alter foraging behavior, competitive aptitude, and predation vulnerability, according to the review. Pesticides harm fish health by accumulating toxins, causing genetic defects, and upsetting the aquatic ecology. These effects put biodiversity in jeopardy and upset the food chain’s delicate balance, raising major environmental issues. It emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary research to better understand fish pesticide toxicity and guide environmental regulatory measures. Implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices to ensure sustainable pesticide use in the environment. Use of non-chemical strategies such as crop rotation, natural predators, and resistant varieties. limit pesticide application to specific pests, thereby minimizing ecological damage and preserving ecosystem equilibrium. We can improve agriculture-aquatic biodiversity coexistence by supporting holistic pesticide management.

Entrepreneurship and Industrial Organization: A Review and Research Agenda

Industrial organization and entrepreneurship can be closely associated subjects, as both require an understanding of the structure and behavior of firms within an industry. This paper aims to review the literature connecting industrial organization and entrepreneurship to develop a better understanding and propose a research agenda. It provides insights into the emergence, development, and conceptual synthesis of industrial organization and entrepreneurship-related issues for future research. The findings reveal that entrepreneurship can be correlated with industrial organization primarily through entry, innovation, and competition. This connection seeks to understand how new firms emerge and grow within existing industries and how incumbents can adapt and compete with new entrants. Entrepreneurship also plays a crucial role in facilitating market entry which can also foster increased innovation and competition. The recognition that entrepreneurship can stimulate entry, innovation, and competition underscores its critical role in shaping market dynamics. This highlights the need for interdisciplinary research, where scholars and policymakers can collaborate to gain a more holistic understanding of market dynamics and promote economic growth.

A Survey of Detection and Mitigation for Fake Images on Social Media Platforms

Recently, the spread of fake images on social media platforms has become a significant concern for individuals, organizations, and governments. These images are often created using sophisticated techniques to spread misinformation, influence public opinion, and threaten national security. This paper begins by defining fake images and their potential impact on society, including the spread of misinformation and the erosion of trust in digital media. This paper also examines the different types of fake images and their challenges for detection. We then review the recent approaches proposed for detecting fake images, including digital forensics, machine learning, and deep learning. These approaches are evaluated in terms of their strengths and limitations, highlighting the need for further research. This paper also highlights the need for multimodal approaches that combine multiple sources of information, such as text, images, and videos. Furthermore, we present an overview of existing datasets, evaluation metrics, and benchmarking tools for fake image detection. This paper concludes by discussing future directions for fake image detection research, such as developing more robust and explainable methods, cross-modal fake detection, and the integration of social context. It also emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary research that combines computer science, digital forensics, and cognitive psychology experts to tackle the complex problem of fake images. This survey paper will be a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners working on fake image detection on social media platforms.

A comprehensive review of arsenic contamination in India with an emphasis on its detection through biosensors and bioremediation from the aqueous system

AbstractIn India, where millions of people use groundwater for drinking, arsenic pollution in groundwater is a major environmental and public health issue. The review begins by analyzing the sources and causes of groundwater arsenic pollution, including natural geological processes and anthropogenic activities like mining and industrial discharge. It emphasizes India's most arsenic‐contaminated regions and the health risks of long‐term exposure. The review's second section focuses on the use of biosensors to find arsenic in groundwater. A potential method is provided by biosensors because of their great sensitivity, selectivity, and quick response. The benefits and drawbacks of several types of biosensors, including optical, electrochemical, and microbiological biosensors, are discussed. The utilization of nanomaterials, biomolecular recognition components, and miniature devices are only a few of the most recent developments in biosensor technology for arsenic detection that are studied. The review's last section discusses methods for bio‐remediating aqueous systems that have been contaminated with arsenic. Various bioremediation techniques are covered in detail, including microbial degradation, phytoremediation, and biosorption. The promise for removing arsenic using native microbes and plant species is highlighted, along with the difficulties of widespread application and long‐term sustainability. Overall, focusing on the detection of arsenic using biosensors and investigating bioremediation techniques, this review offers a thorough grasp of the arsenic poisoning in groundwater in India. In order to combat arsenic contamination and protect the health and wellbeing of the impacted populations in India, it emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary research and collaboration among scientists, engineers, policymakers, and local communities.

Evaluation of indoor air pollutants and new buildings’ solutions to reduce them: literature review and fundamentals

During the past few decades various symptoms and illnesses have been increasingly attributed to nonindustrial indoor environments. In general, indoor exposure to noxious chemical, physical, and biological hazards occur at low levels, however, such indoors exposition are very common (Seltzer, 1994: pp. 318-326). Symptoms such as drowsiness, headache, fatigue, burning eyes and breathing difficulties are signs that could indicate a high percentage of pollutants in the indoor environment, although we often tend to attribute them to other causes. This phenomenon which causes disease is called - sick building syndrome - (SBS) and it is a growing problem (Carrie A Redlich, 1997: pp. 1013-1016). SBS has been reported with increasing frequency since the 1970s, as older, naturally ventilated buildings have been replaced by more energy efficient, “airtight” buildings. SBS was frequently associated with workplaces, where the employees work together and spend most of their time. However, in this pandemic and post-pandemic situation, the smart working, and the greater crowding of living spaces, could cause this problem to arise even in private homes. Now, in the framework of COVID, it has become even more necessary to look closely at the quality of the air in homes. Indeed we spend more and more time inside enclosed and shared places, where the air can be much more polluted than outside. At home and office, we are surrounded, and we daily breathe dangerous but invisible substances, which penetrate our body without being noticed. In order to propose the best house's construction and rebuilding solutions, this review considers the contamination sources that can cause diseases in the house's environment. The innovative approach, based on the complexity of the problem, it focuses attention about the different factors in order to reduce the indoor air pollutions. Finally, having identified the factors that play a significant role in environmental indoor house's contamination, a clear picture should emerge to draw conclusions and propose the best buildings solutions. Based on the complexity of the problem and the need for interdisciplinary research.

Аксиологические ориентиры в социальной рекламе для российской молодежи

<p>This study aims to clarify the role of axiology in advertising. The axiological component has been considered in the composition of social advertising for young people in present-day Russia. The materials of the analysis (including linguistic analysis) of advertising messages published in the official Telegram channel of the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs (Rosmolodezh) for the first semester 2023 are presented. The results make it possible to point to a number of relevant and socially significant values, which are formed in the minds of the readers of this information source and young citizens of the Russian Federation. It is noted that there is a need for interdisciplinary research to determine the cognitive impact of advertising on consumers.</p>

Fashioning Masculinities: Critical reflections on curation and future directions in masculinity studies

Fashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear at the V&A Museum in London (19 March–6 November 2022) marked a significant curatorial and cultural moment. Curated by Claire Wilcox, Rosalind McKever and Marta Franceschini, the exhibition explored the shifting landscape of menswear by focusing on the intersections among fashion, art, time and gender. This review essay critically reflects on the curation of the Fashioning Masculinities exhibition and the accompanying two-day symposium (13–14 October 2022) co-convened by the V&A and the Masculinities Research Hub at London College of Fashion. It argues for the need for interdisciplinary research and curation on menswear and masculinity studies to explore a plurality of intersectional identities. Additionally, this article argues for the importance of engaging diverse audiences across the sector with rich stories of making, wearing and fashioning identities. There remains considerable scope to move beyond a focus upon historical dress and luxury designer items, to include the often invisible and untold narratives of ordinary and everyday dress.

UNDERSTANDING THE QURAN HOLISTICALLY: INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDY OF THE LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS OF THE QURAN

This study aims to analyze the impact of the language used in the Quran on Islamic discourse, using qualitative research methods and content analysis of Quranic verses and scholarly literature. The study finds that the Quranic language's unique literary style and linguistic features contribute to its authority and persuasiveness, shaping Islamic discourse over time. Rhetorical devices, such as repetition and parallelism, add to the text's effectiveness. The study highlights the importance of understanding the Quranic language and its impact on Islamic theology, jurisprudence, and ethics, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary research. By analyzing the linguistic and literary features of the Quran, scholars can gain a deeper understanding of the text's meaning and message and appreciate its continued relevance in contemporary times. This study contributes to the broader understanding of the role of language in shaping religious discourse and interpretation.

Cleaner pathway for developing bioactive textile materials using natural dyes: a review

Bioactive textile materials are a promising field in the development of functional textiles. The integration of bioactive compounds, such as natural dyes, into textiles offers a range of benefits, including UV protection, anti-microbial properties, and insect repellency. Natural dyes have been shown to have bioactivity, and their integration into textiles has been extensively studied. The application of natural dyes on textile substrates will be an advantage for their inherent functional properties along with their non-toxic and eco-friendly nature. This review addresses the effect of natural dyes on surface modification of most used natural and synthetic fibers and its subsequent effects on their anti-microbial, UV protection and insect repellent properties with natural dyes. Natural dyes have proved to be environmentally friendly in an attempt to improve bioactive functions in textile materials. This review provides a clear view of sustainable resources for the dyeing and finishing of textiles to develop a cleaner pathway of bioactive textiles using natural dyes. Furthermore, the dye source, advantages and disadvantages of natural dye, main dye component, and chemical structure are listed. However, there is still a need for interdisciplinary research to further optimize the integration of natural dyes into textiles and to improve their bioactivity, biocompatibility, and sustainability. The development of bioactive textile materials using natural dyes has the potential to revolutionize the textile industry and to provide a range of benefits to consumers and society.

Interactive technologies through the lens of team effectiveness: an interdisciplinary systematic literature review

ABSTRACT Although interactive technologies increasingly shape teamwork, their relationship with team effectiveness (inputs, processes, emergent states, and outputs) remains unclear. To provide an overview of this relationship, we systematically reviewed empirical articles from Work and Organizational Psychology (WOP) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). To bring the two disciplines closer, we analysed 37 papers that validated the effects of interactive technologies, focusing on the type and characteristics of these technologies, the psychological mechanisms that they intended to support, and the methodological information of the conducted studies. We found that interactive technologies had mainly positive effects on various team effectiveness components (e.g., action team processes and task-related outputs), especially when they allowed team members to be physically close to each other or to have the option to interact synchronously. Nevertheless, the picture remains incomplete (e.g., limited evidence about affect-related properties and outputs), with several methodological limitations (e.g., mainly experimental studies with student teams). We discuss ways to shape the existing technological potential for effective team functioning, especially for affective and implicit psychological mechanisms. We highlight the need for interdisciplinary research and present an exemplary approach as an inspiration for WOP and HCI to work together and move beyond the boundaries of each single discipline.

Between Philosophy and International Criminal Law: Examples of Interdisciplinary Approaches

Abstract This introduction is written by the two guest editors for a Special Issue of International Criminal Law Review entitled ‘Between Philosophy and International Criminal Law: Examples of Interdisciplinary Approaches.’ The text briefly explains the need for interdisciplinary research on law, meaning that the scholarly approaches are not limited to the theoretical foundations and methodologies of international criminal law (icl) and international Criminal Justice (icj). The introduction also provides an interdisciplinary snapshot of a selection of seven contributions, which represent a broad spectrum of examples.

Methane Emission: Strategies to Reduce Global Warming in Relation to Animal Husbandry Units with Emphasis on Ruminants

Concerns about global warming and greenhouse gases have increased the interest of governments and the public sector to find solutions. To reduce the effects of global warming caused by greenhouse gases, especially methane, it is necessary to change animal production systems and adopt new strategic approaches. The reduction of enteric methane in livestock is a long-standing problem regarding the energy efficiency of consumed feed. In this review, the sources of production, dissemination, and introduction of accepted scientific and practical solutions in order to reduce methane gas in breeding and production units of dairy cows have been investigated. To carry out this research, a thorough search was conducted in articles published in valid databases between 1967 and 2022. A total of 213 articles were reviewed, and after screening, 159 were included in the study and analyzed using a PRISMA flow diagram. In general, low livestock efficiency, low-quality feed, a shortage of knowledge, and inadequate investment are the main causes of emission of these gases in poor or developing countries. On the other hand, developing countries may not always have access to the same methods that are utilized in industrialized countries to minimize the production of methane and other greenhouse gases like nitrous oxide. According to their conditions, developing countries should use the available tools to reduce methane production and emission, considering the costs, local knowledge, feasibility, and local laws. In future, there will be a greater need for interdisciplinary research to look for sustainable and acceptable methods for reducing methane emissions and other greenhouse gases from animal husbandry units, especially dairy cows. To change the population of rumen methanogens, as the main producers of methane, strategies such as feeding management, addition of inhibitors and vaccination are suggested. Also, there is a need for more applied research for reducing methane emissions.
